It was very brief while it lasted, but the Toronto Maple Leafs unbeaten start to the new NHL season came to an end yesterday as they were beaten in one of the most thrilling fixtures we will see all season.
The Montreal Canadiens were the visitors to the Scotiabank, and fans would have been forgiven for thinking that it was all over after two periods.
The Maple Leafs pulled away to a 3-1 lead, before being eventually pegged back in the fourth.
Toronto’s goals were scored by Alexander Kerfoot, Trevor Moore and William Nylander. Meanwhile, Austin Matthews continued his hot start to the new season by scoring another brace.
After tying the scores in the final period, the fans in attendance at the Scotiabank were set for a penalty shootout.
The Canadiens were the winners in that after being the only side to find the net.
Michael Hutchinson endured a busy night between the sticks as he made 42 saves in the defeat. He conceded five goals, however, which may be a concern going forward.
The Montreal goals were all spread out between five different players, with Brendan Gallagher getting one of them.
Toronto will look to get back to winning ways when they take on the St Louis Blues in their next game.
